GHOSTS

STELLAR DATE: 10.31.8949 (Adjusted Years)

LOCATION: ISS Lantzer

REGION: Kapteyn’s Star System, Hegemony of Worlds

“You sure you don’t want to come?” Jessica asked Trevor as she stepped back into the auto-armorer, relaxing as it wrapped the ablative plates around her.

“Nah,” Trevor shook his head. “Even with armor, you’re still half my size. You three need to skulk and sneak. That’s not my jam.”

“Well, in armor, Jessica’s going to be a bit less sneaky,” Tangel said from where she leant against the wall, her Mark X skin an inky black void that reflected no light. It made it look like her body was a hole in the universe.

“I can’t transmute bullets into butterflies,” Jessica replied. “Sometimes I get shot.”

Sera laughed as she stepped out of the armorer. “No one gets shot like Tangel. How many hearts is it now?”

“Lost count,” Tangel shrugged before turning to Trevor. “You know the armor we have will keep you stealthed.”

“Heegs have pretty good sensor tech,” the big man replied. “They’ve picked me up before in stealth.”

“It’s the bending deck plates that give him away,” Jessica laughed. “And the heavy breathing, grunting, all that.”

Trevor placed a hand over his heart. “Wow, hon. You cut me to the quick!”

Jessica shook her head. “What does that even mean?”

“You know…I’m not really sure.”

“I could tell you,” Tangel said with a wink. “But that would ruin all the fun.”

Sera’s hair melded into her head as she picked up her helmet. “So, if you’re with us, Tangel, are we just going to use you to bore our way to the surface?”

“Seventeen kilometers?” The blonde woman shook her head. “Stars, no. We’ll take the lift.”

“Do you think it still works?” Jessica asked.

Tangel shrugged. “I’m really interested to see if it does. If not, we’ll just a-grav our way up the shaft.”

“I’m more interested in knowing whether or not the Sirians ever discovered the decoy facility above,” Jessica said. “That was Trist’s idea, you know—making a decoy for this place, and then making it the access point.”

A far-off look came over Tangel, and she shook her head. “No, I never knew that. Not surprised, though. That woman never really stopped being a thief.”

“Nope.” Jessica grinned. “OK, so, ride the lift, and hope we can still get through the decoy facility and up to the surface. We’ll get the lay of the land, and then relay intel out to our battlegroups. Easy peasy.”

Sera groaned. “Did you really have to say that?”

“And you wonder why I volunteered to stay behind,” Trevor said.
